Promoting Community Mental Health Awareness and Access to the Mental Health Services

Mental health in the community is essential. Having access to mental health services is very important, but equally vital is having the knowledge and ability to recognize signs of distress or being overwhelmed. Many community members experience mental health challenges without realizing it or knowing when and where to seek help.

Providing people with accurate information about mental health empowers them to identify early signs of distress and to seek appropriate support. However, access to mental health services remains a key factor in prevention, as it enables individuals to receive care at an early stage and close to home.

The Imbuto Foundation, through the Baho Neza Mental Health Project implemented with Uyisenga Ni Imanzi in Nyaruguru and Nyagatare Districts, has played a crucial role in improving community access to mental health services. In every village, with the support of trained Community-Based Counselors (CBCs), safe spaces were created where people come together to discuss and exchange information on mental health.

These spaces have provided a platform for individuals to release stress and anxiety, overcome loneliness and isolation, and resolve family conflicts. Most importantly, they have supported community members in self-discovery and encouraged screening for those needing further mental health care at nearby referral centers.

So far, this initiative has reached over 78,158 people through community mental health programs. The results are visible improved emotional well-being, trauma healing, resilience building, and strengthened family relationships.
